PhD Deans
The Department of Research has a Deanship of PhD Studies, supported by the Graduate School Office. The PhD Deans supervise the progress of individual PhD candidates’ research and provide them with solicited and unsolicited advice.
What do the PhD Deans do?
The tasks of the PhD Deans include:
- hold starting interviews and evaluation meetings;
- discuss and approve the Training and Supervision Plan (TSP);
- involvement in the admissions procedure for external PhD candidates;
- provide advice to PhD candidates and supervisors on matters such as the training plan;
- consult regularly with PhD candidates, the PhD representative and the Head of the Graduate School;
- coordinate where necessary with the confidential counsellor and HR advisors;
- contribute to shaping policy on doctoral studies within Leiden Law School.
Who are the PhD Deans?
The three PhD Deans each have responsibility for PhD candidates from a number of departments/institutes:
Jim Been is PhD Dean for PhD candidates of:
- Institute for the Interdisciplinary Study of the Law
- Jurisprudence
- Moot Court and advocacy
- Philosophy of Law
- Legal History - Institute of Private Law
Katrien Klep is PhD Dean for PhD candidates of:
- Institute of Public Law
- Europa Institute
- Constitutional and Administrative Law
- Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies - Institute for the Interdisciplinary Study of the Law
- eLaw- Center for Law and Digital Technologies - Institute of Criminal Law and Criminology
Hilde Wermink is PhD Dean for PhD candidates of:
- Institute for the Interdisciplinary Study of the Law
- Van Vollenhoven Institute - Institute of Public Law
- Labour Law and Social Security
- Institute of Air and Space Law - Institute of Tax Law and Economics
